When it comes to hair removal, the choices can be overwhelming. Two of the most popular methods at Beach Haven are waxing and sugaring. Both are highly effective but come with their own set of advantages that might make one more suitable for you than the other. While we pride ourselves on our gentle hard waxing method and expert sugaring techniques, we steer clear of traditional soft wax with strips, as it can be harsher on the skin. In this post, we’ll break down the differences between waxing and sugaring to help you decide which method is best for your hair removal needs.
Side-by-side comparison
Technique
Waxing: At Beach Haven, we use hard wax for a more comfortable hair removal experience compared to Soft Wax. Hard wax adheres only to the hair, not the skin, reducing discomfort and minimizing skin irritation. This method involves applying warm wax to the skin, which “shrink wraps” the hair and is then removed quickly.
Sugaring: Sugaring involves applying a natural paste made from sugar, lemon, and water at room temperature. The paste is molded against the direction of hair growth and then flicked off in the natural direction of growth. This technique not only removes the hair but also exfoliates dead skin cells, leaving your skin smooth.
Results
Since both waxing and sugaring remove hair from the root, they both provide excellent results, providing smooth, hairless skin that lasts for up to six weeks. Some clients notice one form works better for them, so we recommend trying both and choosing your favorite! We don’t have an obvious choice on our end, both work great for everyone 🙂 For facial hair removal, we do tend to prefer waxing, as it removes more of the finer facial hair than sugaring.
Skin types
Waxing: Hard wax is a fantastic option for all skin types but is especially suitable for individuals with normal to resilient skin due to the higher heat. It’s effective on all areas of the body, including sensitive zones like the bikini area.
Sugaring: Sugaring can also be used on all skin types, but is recommended for those with ultra-sensitive skin. Since the sugar paste does not adhere to live skin cells and is applied at a lower temperature, it is incredibly gentle and significantly reduces the risk of irritation. This makes it ideal for those prone to skin sensitivity or who have experienced issues with other forms of hair removal.

Can I get waxed if I have sensitive skin?
Answer: Yes, you can! Our Hard Wax is the gentlest on the market, totally safe for sensitive skin. How often should I get waxed or sugared to maintain the best results?
Answer: We generally recommend returning every 4 to 6 weeks. Regular treatments can help reduce hair growth and ensure smoother results, as hair is removed from the root and tends to grow back finer and sparser. Plus, you get to save 15% when you join our monthly membership and stay regular!
-
Can I get a spray tan on the same day if I have just been waxed or sugared?
Answer: Yes! We perform spray tans after hair removal regularly without any issues.

Tips for first-timers.
If you’re new to hair removal, here are a few tips to ensure a smooth and successful experience at Beach Haven.
First, make sure your hair is at least a quarter of an inch long, which is typically about two weeks of growth after shaving. This length allows the wax or sugar paste to grip the hair effectively. 3-4 weeks (or longer) of growth is ideal for the best results.. Haven’t maintained the area in a while? No worries! Hair cannot be too long for hair removal. We may trim if needed. Please don’t trim yourself, as you may cut too short in some areas.
Prior to your appointment, exfoliate the area gently to remove any dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs. Avoid using creams or lotions on the day of your session, as clean, dry skin achieves the best results. Lastly, if you’re worried about pain, consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes before your appointment to help minimize discomfort. With these simple preparations, you’ll be set for a more comfortable and effective treatment.
